Our History

In 1987 Robert Monk took a big step in his life, from being a wage worker to an owner/driver of a 5 tonne refrigerated truck, transporting fresh fruit and produce from Opotiki to the Auckland markets. At this time, he worked for Eastland Haulage, who operated an 8 tonne freight truck carting freight from Opotiki to Auckland.

In 1988 Robert Monk formed a company called Opotiki Refrigerated Produce, to reflect the nature of his business. In 1989, Robert purchased the vehicle operated by Eastland Haulage, which was the starting point of his growth. In 1990 he purchased two additional truck and trailer units to accommodate the continued growth of the company. It was in this year, that he made the decision to change the name of his company to Robert Monk Transport Limited. During the next 5 years, the company grew to having a fleet of 15 trucks, with depots in Opotiki, Te Puke, Katikati and Auckland – carting general freight, fruit and produce.

Robert Monk Transport Limited was the first company to cart kiwifruit from coolstore to shipside. A trial that involved supply groups to control their own destination with the implementation of the Stage III kiwifruit onshore restructuring program. This program now plays a major part in the supply chains, thanks to Robert Monk Transport Limited in 1996.

Due to the nature of the fruit and produce cartage – namely the seasonal fluctuations, Robert Monk purchased his local opposition – Opotiki Transport Company. This boosted the fleet to 39 vehicles, whilst allowing diversification into livestock cartage, bulk haulage and fertiliser spreading.

1998 saw Robert Monk Transport Limited become one of 12 successful companies in obtaining an Affco livestock cartage contract, which covered the large area of the East Coast from Te Puia Springs to Matata, up to Galatea.

In 1999, Robert Monk Transport Limited purchased Coulter Transport – a company based in Mount Maunganui – which enabled the company to get heavily involved in container cartage. This acquisition added 13 more units to the operation. Then, March 2000 saw the company move into new purpose-built premises, with approximately 30,000 sq.ft of storage, allowing the company to steadily grow it’s general freight division.

Over the next several years, various changes to the company were made including :- opening a fully fledged freight depot in Gisborne, enabling Robert Monk Transport Limited to service it’s clients with local people based in the area and also providing opportunities for cartage into the Hawkes Bay area. November 2006 saw the sale of the Livestock Division to concentrate on core activities being general freight, container cartage and bulk haulage. Robert Monk Transport Limited also purchased various new equipment, allowing the company to be well positioned to meet the requirements of all its customers – being able to offer a total package from container transport, devanning goods, storage and distribution.
